here, mothers are

first & last, equal & opposite

After spending some time with the audio from our visit with Diana, Queenie, and family, as things go, two favorite moments turned up at the very beginning and very end of the experience.

Diana held the microphone as we all walked into her mother’s house. Queenie knew we were coming, but Diana’s voice seems to carry a hint of nerves, perhaps worried about how her Mom might react to the entourage she was marching into the pristine living room.

“I, I got some friends with me!” Diana truly sounds like a daughter in that moment, which pivots nicely into the next piece of audio, where she is very much a mother.

Again, Diana held the microphone, this time sitting quite close to her daughter-in-law Anne, who had just arrived with her son (Diana’s grandson). As the toddler dominated the attention of everybody else in the room, Diana asks Anne a string of questions.

The parallel between Diana’s questions, the commotion in the room, and Anne’s answer is so perfect.
