here, mothers are

starting to put the pieces together

The process of translating hours of interviews and hundreds of photos to a physical installation has begun. Over the past couple weeks, we’ve had a chance to spend time with the conversations and images we’ve gathered. Today, we hunkered down in Sonja’s studio to listen and look together, pulling out bits of dialogue that got at core ideas of our experiences. Those were translated into written text and pinned to the wall, which we then roughly matched with contact prints of photos.

While we’ve both had plenty of experience with different kinds of editing, this distilling process was a challenge for us both. It was a very different kind of listening. Selective, filtering, intimate listening.

We ended the day re-visiting the site for the installation, a city lot across the street from the Dominican Center.  Adam stands next to the house like planters that were installed last year.
